27-03-2012:Keep mobile handsets 15 cm away from medical implants: DoT........PTI & ET

NEW DELHI: People having medical implants should preferably keep a distance of 15 centimetres between the implant and the mobile phone, according to the instructions issued by the Department of Telecom.

Instructions were issued after accepting the inter- ministerial committee formed by DoT to examine the electro magnetic field radiations from mobile phones.

Replying to a query in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora said all indigenous makers have also been instructed to display specific absorption rate value on handsets on or before September 1, 2012.

The instructions also say that mobile handset made and sold in India or imported shall be checked for compliance of SAR (Specific Absorption Rate).

The SAR levels are fixed based on assumption that continuous exposure to mobile phone adversely effects body tissues that are in touch with device.

According to new guidelines, mobile phones sold in India should have maximum SAR level of 1.6 Watt per kilogram average over a mass of 1 gram of human tissue which means that the device should emit maximum of 1.6 watt of energy over 1 gram of body tissue exposed to it.
