14-10-2011: Draft telecom policy : Booster for cloud technology and data service...news

NEW DELHI: One of the most significant achievements of the draft telecom policy is its forward-looking attitude towards new technologies such as cloud, machine to machine (M2M) and its overall focus on data.

The Indian telecom sector has seen a boom in voice services with over 90% of the revenues still coming from vanilla voice between consumers . Going forward, however , technologies such as cloud, M2M and an overall focus on data could spur growth not just for India's IT and ITeS sectors but also businesses who use high-end telecom services - most of which revolve around data services.

"Cloud is the future. It is also a good source of revenue for operators if consumers access cloud services through their mobile phones," says Rajan Mathews , D-G , COAI.

Technologies such as cloud accelerate innovation, service customers better, lower organizational expenses , improve IT efficiency and flexibility, and bring about a level-playing field. Equally, they throw up areas of data governance, including privacy and confidentiality, data ownership, as well as security issues relating to inter-operability , portability, reliability , and service level commitment etc. The trick in cloud computing is 'less regulation is more' .

Governments usually worry about issues like national security requirements , governance as well as data privacy when adapting new technologies like cloud and M2M....ET news
